LinkedIn Improves For a Part 3

Yes, LinkedIn was originally developed as a resume’ posting site, and yes, it is still used for that purpose and remains an excellent platform for this use. And no, that’s not all it is. I am amazed by how many people are still failing to realize that LinkedIn is a powerful tool for promoting their business, as well as themselves. However, those who are privy to that fact (about 250 million at last count) are reaping the benefits and fueling what is probably one of the most underrated social platforms. Those numbers double Google+ and are closing in on Twitter. Ok, so it probably won’t pass Facebook in sheer numbers but who cares? You’ll get more useful information from spending five minutes on LinkedIn that you’ll get from spending five days on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc… In my opinion. If you want to see pretty pictures, go there. If you want to create some quality exposure, share what you and your business has to offer then get LinkedIn.

How can you make it work for business?


Professionals connecting with other professionals… In my opinion, one of the best aspects of LinkedIn is how easy it is to make new connections and not just locally, regionally, nationally, I am talking about globally. The yellow pages can’t do that! Having world wide connections gives you exposure that even money can’t buy. And just remember that you never really know who may be in need of your services. This is a great way for you to find them, or for them to discover you. Right now, a user on LinkedIn is being contacted about a job that they likely would’ve missed had they not been a member. Maybe next time that member will be you. Opportunity is knocking so open the door!


This is another great asset that comes with being a LinkedIn member. There are groups that cover just about every niche. Find a few that pertain to you and get busy. Starting discussions and engaging with other members is a great way to promote yourself. At the same time it will reflect well on your business. Yes, it will take some effort on your part, but it is all worth it at the end of the day. If you have the ability to create stimulating discussions you may also become recognized as a top influencer, and your inbox will explode with invitations to connect.


What better way to showcase your expertise? The blogging feature was originally released to a select group of members and immediately became very popular. LinkedIn members have been using it as a tool to further promote their business and gain that all important commodity in the world of marketing… exposure! LinkedIn recently announced they are opening the blogging platform up to everyone on LinkedIn. I am debating if they should have left well enough alone here. Yes, it gives more individuals the opportunity to get noticed, but at the same time it diluted a great feature. Before just about every blog was well written with valuable information, and now the quality has definitely taken a hit. Some days it’s like searching for a needle in a haystack to find a great post. Nevertheless, take advantage of it and make it work for you. It may take a little more effort to get noticed, but you can really shine.


Not happy with your standard profile? Well, you’re in luck. LinkedIn does offer premium accounts that will really make your profile stand out and they are reasonably priced as well. Not only will your background image look better, you will also be privy to seeing almost everyone that views your page. Wouldn’t it be nice to know who is interested in your work? You are also given the ability to easily communicate with someone you’re not connected with. Both of these could lead to a new opportunity. Basic, yet free, accounts might limit your potential. It may be worth the upgrade. Obviously the more you pay the more you get but for about $100/year you’ll have access to very useful features.

Now keep in mind, as always, what you put into LinkedIn will likely dictate what you get out of this platform. Interaction and engagement are essential to your success. You cannot just start this social account and expect the business to come to you. If you are ready to make the commitment, it’s prime time to get LinkedIn.
