Year of the Goat

A Brief History of Social Marketing 2015

by Bill Nolan

Calm and gentle, 2015 sure was. We didn’t see a whole lot of anything exciting going on in the past 11 months of social marketing. Everything overall stayed status quo when it comes to an Apple-like style of advancements. We ask ourselves, is it the result of the all-to-comfortable producers or the slow paced business users? Let’s see…

Year of the Goat

The Year of Video. Giggle.

As we look back to the predictions that kicked off 2015, we now know they were meant for multiple years to see real progress. Come on, 2015 was suppose to be the year of video. This is kind of funny since it’s been the year of video for the past couple years, and it’s already included in some predictions for 2016. Sure, companies love the idea of using video for promotions, but most are still trying to figure out how to make them and make them really work. Most social networks have been equipped for video, at different levels, for a long while. They just keep tweaking how businesses can upload or filter the video in the process. This may just be a marketing ploy, so they can promote “offering a new service,” that’s not so great. I am sure we will revisit video again in our 2016 predictions, as everyone else will, in the coming weeks.

Ello

“Is this Really A Debate” PART 2

by Bill Nolan

Which Way To Go With This?

Maybe it was the mystique surrounding Ello, the not so new social network, that originally pulled me in. They were that exclusive club that everyone wanted to be part of but you needed an invitation to join. Ello threw out hints about what they had to offer, how they were better than every other network and so on. It was reminiscent of the 1989 commercial for the Infiniti Q45. If you remember, they never actually showed the vehicle in that ad, they just used the anticipation factor as a tool to build momentum for themselves. In the case of Infiniti however, the vehicles turned out to be fairly spectacular. As for Ello? Well, I basically feel like a little kid on Christmas morning, tearing into my presents, only to discover that Santa only brought me clothes. In other words, disappointment with a capital D. Maybe this is exactly why Ello went with the “shrouded in secrecy” route to begin with… they knew their platform was less than stellar.

H(ELLO) can I come in?

Ello

We need the secret handshake.

by Bill Nolan

By now, most of us have heard of Ello. Tagged as “anti-Facebook” due to their pledge not to run ads. This may be a very noble concept, but will this new social media platform work? More importantly, is there any potential for your business with Ello? This network is definitely intriguing, and a major contributing factor is they are still only accepting new users in small increments. I guess that makes them “exclusive.” Although, I really don’t know how any social media platform I’m not part of can be considered exclusive, but that’s a blog for another day. So, until I can figure out the secret handshake that gives me total access to this closed-door site, I will have to give you an outsider’s view from what I’ve seen so far.
